Local Treasures: Mad Ink

Have you seen how great our logo is? I mean, doesn’t it just make you smile when you look at it?

Our goal here at Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows is to bring some sunshine to everyone’s day with our unique products. We knew we wanted our whole company image to bring that sense of joy. We just weren’t sure how to create a logo that would emanate this.

Little did we know that someone we had already met had the solution for us!

We know Madeline O’Green and her family through our mutual participation with Warren Civic Theatre. We had actually done a lollipop order for her family when her mom noticed we didn’t have a logo on our products. She suggested we connect with Madeline if we were interested in commissioning one.

We thought about this for a few weeks. Because if we have a logo that means we’re an official business, right? Were we sure we wanted to do that? But the more we talked about it, the more we realized that Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows wasn’t going anywhere. It’s who we are. And we really needed a consistent image to go with our brand.

We also knew that we needed to put our money where our mouth was. We talk constantly about buying local and supporting small businesses. Hiring a local artist for this task was a great chance to do just that. Add to the equation that this was someone we already knew and liked and it was a perfect fit.

Beyond this, Madeline’s artistic accomplishments are so impressive for such a young artist. We wanted to hire her to do our logo before she got too big to do jobs like this!

Last fall Madeline was accepted to attend the Center for the Advanced Study of the Arts. She is also the illustrator of the Elemental Kingdoms series.

Recently she won the Ferndale-based “The Artist in You” competition. Winners of this competition have their work displayed outside of businesses in Ferndale, Michigan. You can find Madeline’s work outside of Blumz on 9 Mile Rd.

Because Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows is more than just the products to us, it’s a very specific feel, we did wonder if anyone would be able to capture that. Sometimes it is hard to explain the feeling behind our business, so how could we expect someone else to capture it in art?

Then we got our proofs. We could have never dreamed up anything as perfect as what Madeline created. It was everything we wanted and more! We went from not being sure if we really wanted a logo, to wanting to get about 99 different products with our logo on it because everyone needs to see it.

So, needless to say, we highly recommend her.

If you have a piece you would like to commission, or just want to follow her success story, we encourage you to like Mad Ink on Facebook.

And seriously… have you seen this logo my shirt? Isn’t it cute?
