The Importance of Supporting Local Businesses

You might have noticed we love to use the hashtags #buylocal and #michiganmade. But why does it matter?

Personally, I have always strived to buy from local small businesses as much as I was able (and when I remembered) and in fact I have been blessed to work for a small, locally owned business for well over a decade. However, when Maura and I started Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows it naturally took on new importance.

You see, when you support a small business, you are supporting someone’s dream. How great is it to know that a purchase can help make dreams come true? No one is more aware of it than fellow small business owners.

One of our favorite parts of participating in the local farmers’ markets was meeting the other vendors. We got to know many of them and we all like to purchase from each other.

The best part is that we aren’t just buying products from a small business to fill our “buy local” quota. We are buying from people that are passionate about the products that they are crafting. The result being many fabulous finds.

Besides great product and the community, dedicating more spending dollars to our local merchants helps to grow our community.

It was another local business, Pop’s Corn and Candy Shoppe, that have given us advice and guidance that brought us to ultimately passing food license inspection last week. They are also dedicated to carrying products from many small business from the area (including ours).

So with these things in mind we will start showcasing local businesses that we love on our blog, once a week. This will range from products, to restaurants and stores. And anything else we feel like throwing in!

So stay tuned. We hope that we inspire you to explore the small businesses your community has to offer.
